Press Release: Faraday Microgrids Powers the First Islandable Renewable Microgrid for Acute Care Hospitals

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Faraday Microgrids Powers the First Islandable Renewable Microgrid for Acute Care Hospitals

ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA — Faraday Microgrids (www.faradaymicrogrids.com) is proud to announce the successful deployment and operation of the first renewable energy microgrid in the U.S. designed specifically to autonomously power the critical systems of an acute care hospital during utility outages.

Built to withstand California’s increasingly unstable power grid, this advanced energy system combines over 2MW of solar, 1MW of fuel cell, and a massive 9MWh battery energy storage system, enabling seamless islanding capabilities and setting a new benchmark for hospital resilience.

Developed by Faraday and a team of industry leaders—Mazzetti and Nhu Energy—the system now ranks as the largest hospital-based microgrid of its kind in North America.

“This project is a major step forward in our mission to make healthcare facilities energy-resilient, cost-efficient, and environmentally responsible,” said David Bliss, CEO of Faraday Microgrids. “Hospitals shouldn’t have to depend solely on diesel backup or a fragile grid to stay operational.”

The microgrid at the Ontario Medical Center was developed by Faraday to reduce diesel generator reliance, lower utility grid demand, and improve operational efficiency. This advanced system showcases how resilient energy infrastructure can support critical healthcare operations during utility outages.

Faraday gratefully acknowledges the California Energy Commission for awarding $8.35 million in grant funding, a key enabler in bringing this groundbreaking initiative to life. The CEC’s support underscores California’s leadership in fostering resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure across critical sectors.

Key Highlights:

  • First-of-its-kind islandable microgrid for hospital critical load support
  • Largest hospital microgrid in its class in North America
  • Combines solar, fuel cell, and battery storage for around-the-clock reliability
  • Supports California’s clean energy goals while slashing diesel use
  • Funded in part by $8.35M grant from the California Energy Commission
